Ingredient Decoder Series: What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Ingredient Decoder Series 4 min read

With fall finally here and winter just around the corner, we are celebrating the return of lower temperatures and cozy fall outfits. But with cooler weather comes the nagging set of worries about our complexion: how are we going to avoid those dry patches of skin during the arid winter months?

Meet Hyaluronic Acid, the Wonder Woman of moisturizing ingredients.

Many people have heard the term “hyaluronic acid,” but very few know what it is, why it’s important, or even where to find it. Some are even nervous about the name itself, since acid is commonly known to dry out and irritate skin. But this ingredient, with its mega-moisture-retaining properties, may be the key to maintaining your healthy complexion this winter.

So, what exactly is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan that is naturally produced by our own bodies, making it both safe and effective for our skin. There are tons of scientific explanations as to what, exactly, a glycosaminoglycan is, but simply put, it’s a carbohydrate molecule, like starch or cellulose. While we’ve all been warned against carbohydrates in the past (does anyone else miss pizza?), this particular carb is one that you are going to want to add to your skincare routine, if you haven’t already.

Carbs are great and everything… But what can it do for my skin?

Hydration

Hyaluronic acid is widely celebrated for its ability to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, which makes it one of the most ideal ingredients for maintaining moisture and giving our complexion that supple look. This mighty molecule can be found in our skin, joints, and eyes and has even been praised for its assistance in cataract surgery and tendon procedures.

Our bodies have the ability to easily absorb topical applications of this ingredient, which makes it versatile and easy to use. Hyaluronic acid acts as a sponge for your skin, making it an effective ingredient for locking in moisture. And because it naturally occurs in our bodies, hyaluronic acid is generally considered safe for all skin types, whether you experience oily, sensitive, or blemish-prone skin.

Antioxidants

Our bodies are constantly bombarded with exterior aggressors, like harmful chemicals and UV rays, that are known to cause damage to our skin, putting us on the constant lookout for ways to replenish and protect our complexion. Combine these exterior aggressors with the fact that our skin tends to lose its moisture as we age anyway, and we’re left with thirsty skin that could use some extra love and attention.

Since a glass of wine every night just isn’t enough to get our daily dose of antioxidants, this is where hyaluronic acid can help. Luckily, this ingredient contains both antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, which help protect our faces from harmful environmental factors, redness, and skin sensitivities. This means that hyaluronic acid is a great proactive ingredient to add to your routine and ensure protection for your face. But don’t worry – you can still have your daily glass of wine if you want!

Anti-Aging Properties

As we get older, our skin becomes less elastic and generally much drier, which is why we experience fine lines and wrinkles. Sun damage, lifestyle choices, lack of sleep, and stress are all contributors to the aging process of our skin as well, which means that we need to constantly care for and rehydrate our skin. Hyaluronic acid is a great way to ensure that your face has a fuller appearance and even helps to stimulate new cell growth and plump out those wrinkles. Simply put, having that extra moisture from gives your skin the elasticity it needs to maintain your youthful glow.

Apply hyaluronic acid twice a day, in morning and evening following cleansing.

How do I incorporate hyaluronic acid into my skincare regimen, and where can I find it?

We recommend applying hyaluronic acid topically twice a day, in the morning and evening, following your cleansing routine. Like with most ingredients, hyaluronic acid works best if it has a partner, like water, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. We also recommend choosing products that contain multiple powerhouse ingredients, so your skin can experience benefits from hyaluronic acid and others, like squalane or coconut oil. You can even choose to take hyaluronic acid through oral supplements!

Hyaluronic acid is easy to apply and is usually found within other products, like serums and moisturizers, so be sure to check the labels before purchasing. Many times, hyaluronic acid will be listed on the front of a product, but if you don’t see it, you can always check the ingredients list, where it may be listed as HA, hyaluronic acid, hyaluronate, or hyaluronate sodium.
